Unfortunately the British empire didn’t end in 1997. We still occupy many otherwise foreign territories, like the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar. We also still, like the US, have military bases around the world, enforcing British policy overseas and abiding by British law (extraterritoriality). There are still many in Germany, for example.
