I was emergency taxed after waitressing more than 80 hours a week over the summer to make enough money to survive my first semester at university, which meant I lost 40% of my income and ran out of money just before Christmas. I still had the 48 cans of baked beans (I’m British) that my mum had given me as a going to university gift, so I had enough to make it to Christmas without starving. But being surrounded by the children of the wealthy elite while they went out for meals and bought drinks at bars, it was a slap in the face for anyone who talks about learning how to budget.
