Thank you for this, especially the last point. I’ll be (hopefully) starting my doctoral program in October, and the main reason I decided to quit freelancing and make the leap into full-time academia is that I can’t think of anything I enjoy more than reading and regurgitating new ideas and research. You’ve got to love what you do and feel like you’re working towards some way of contributing to the greater good if you’re going to stick out something as huge as a PhD.
