I came over from IG to read your full piece. I’m glad the issue of student d*&t came up. Coming from the UK (via China) to study in Germany really showcased how important free higher education is. Many of my classmates from my Masters in Germany took as long as 8 years to finish their Bachelors, which would never have been possible for me because of the semesterly tuition fees due at all UK universities. As an EU citizen (just about), I am able to study in Germany for just 250 EUR per semester (the tuition fees in the UK are more than ten times that amount). Having just gotten pregnant, the prospect of remaining enrolled for an extra year to finish my MA isn’t daunting at all. In the UK, it might spell the end of my academic career.
